They measure the same loan book problem of non-performing assets but from different angles. Understanding what separates them is essential for anyone reading an NBFC’s financial statements or assessing its credit quality.

Gross NPA is the total outstanding balance of all non-performing loans, the raw, unprovision-adjusted measure of how much money is at risk. Net NPA is the Gross NPA minus the provisions the NBFC has already set aside against those loans. Net NPA is the residual uncovered risk the amount that would hit equity capital if every NPA account were to produce zero recovery.

The Net NPA represents the exposure that is not yet covered by provisions the amount that would erode equity capital if there were zero recovery from any NPA account.
